Fractured Bone Treatment in Hyderabad | Common Types of Bone Fractures
The most common bone and joint issues are dislocations and fractures as many of us experience them at some point in our lives. Bones provide structural stability, strength, and support to the body. They are very strong structures mostly built with calcium and other minerals. They primarily shield internal organs.
Optimum calcium levels in the body decide the strength of bones and low calcium levels make the bones weak and fragile and thus they become vulnerable to dislocations and fractures. In rare cases, bone cancer can weaken the bones and make them vulnerable to fractures. Similarly, bone conditions such as osteomalacia and osteoporosis, repetitive motions, and overuse of bones and cartilages may also lead to stress fractures.
Our Skeletal System
Bones, cartilages, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels combine in different shapes and densities to form skeletal structures. Bones are the strongest parts of the skeletal system as they provide strength to the body against the earth’s gravity.
Bone Fracture
A Dislocation or fracture can occur when your bone or joint is struck with greater force than it can sustain. The higher the pressure, the more severe is the fracture. A fracture can range from a mild sprain to the crushing of bones. When you twist a bar too far, it breaks under excessive strain – bones tend to break likewise when they undergo any excessive external pressure. Though bones are strong structures they are vulnerable to injuries and damage and thus bend or break. A crack, a break in the bones of the body is known as a fracture. There are different types of fractures based on the severity. A dislocated bone can also sometimes lead to fractures or sprains. A fracture can range from as mild as a hairline crack to the one that causes the bone to break and pierce out of the skin. Complicated fractures alter the natural positioning of the bone and break or prevent the normal blood supply and cause complications.
Open fractures are complicated ones as the bone breaks in such a way that bone fragments come out of the skin. The wound also penetrates down to the broken bone. This type of fracture is prone to infections as both the wound and broken bone are vulnerable.
The most common causes of fractures include:
- Physical injuries
- Falls from heights
- Sports injuries
- Traumatic events such as road and vehicle accidents
Some of the common types of fractures include:
Open fracture: These are compound types as the broken bone pierced through the skin breaking it. The broken bone may or may not be visible in the wound.
Comminuted fracture: The broken bone may break into three or more pieces.
Stable fracture: In this type, the bone breaks, but the broken ends of the bone remain in line and they do not get out of place.
Oblique fracture has an angled pattern.
Transverse fracture has a horizontal fracture line.

Casting: A plaster cast is the most common type of fracture treatment. A fiberglass cast can also be used to heal the broken bones after repositioning them. The cast let the broken ends of the bones to heal in a proper position.
Functional Brace or Cast: This type of approach is suitable for some but not for all fractures. In this type, a brace or cast allows controlled or limited movement of the nearby joints.
Traction: This is not a definitive treatment for bone fractures. It allows alignment of bones or a bone by a gentle pulling action.
External Fixation
The orthopedic doctor fixes metal screws or pins above and below the fracture site. The screws or pins support the broken bone in place with the help of a metal rod placed outside the skin. The metal rod connected to the screws provides a stable frame that supports or holds the bones in a proper position.
Open Reduction and Internal Fixation
In this type of procedure, an Orthopedic doctor, first of all, reduces or repositions the broken bone fragments into normal alignment and keeps the bones in position by using special screws or supportive metal plates on the outer surface of the bone. The fragments may also be held together by inserting rods down through the center of the bone.
Recovery
For faster recovery, one must follow their doctor’s advice and instructions as many fractures may take several weeks or even months to heal. The pain stops long before the fracture remains solid enough to handle normal day-to-day activities. One should always continue to limit their movement until their bone heals properly and becomes strong enough to manage weight and normal activity. Due to limited and restricted motion due to the recovery period the bone and the muscles around it may lose strength and a range of motion. Dr. Praharsha will recommend specific exercises to help restore muscle strength, flexibility, agility, and joint motion.
